OUR POSITIVE IMPACT

REFRESHINGLY HONEST VODKA

Zero shortcuts. 100% transparency. That’s what we call changing the spirits business for good.

We live in a world powered by fossil fuels. But we’re not ones to follow the status quo. So we’ve been doing things our way since the beginning, creating ethical vodka and going out of our way to give back to people and the planet.

SUSTAINABLE FROM DAY ONE

Ever since our founder Chris started to make vodka from apples that were too precious to waste, his drive for sustainability has never gone away. We scrutinise every detail, from the glass and labels to the stoppers, materials, packaging, energy and water, obsessing over everything that keeps the distillery running. Because let’s face it, if we’re not saving the planet, who will be?

20% EMPLOYEE OWNED

Traditional business models focus on maximising profit for shareholders, but we want all our employees to share in the success of our business. That’s why we have a unique employee profit share deed that distributes 20% of our business profits among our employees.

OUR COMMITMENT

To date, we have funded the planting of over 8,500 trees around the world with Ecologi.

Additionally, for every new subscriber to our email newsletters, we fund a tree to be planted somewhere around the world.

For each of our employees, we purchase an Ecologi Climate Action subscription. This subscription supports climate projects to compensate for each employee’s carbon footprint (8 tonnes CO2e per year) as well as tree-planting projects.

VODKA THAT HITS DIFFERENT

We’re not into talking fluff when it comes to sustainability, so you’ll only find us sharing straight up facts. Take our ethanol: most distilleries don’t produce their own, but we make ours from scratch. This is because ethanol is the most energy-intensive part of spirit-making. So by controlling this crucial aspect of production, we have the power to reduce our carbon footprint.

GO ON, BE NOSY

We’re okay with it. Here’s a round-up of some of our sustainability highlights.

Since September 2023, we’ve been B Corp certified. The impact of this goes way beyond demonstrating our commitment to sustainability: it assures our customers that they’re making a positive impact by choosing our vodka.

Our team planted 361 apple trees in the field behind our distillery, working under the supervision of tree-planting experts. Our 28 different apple tree varieties are made up of a mixture of cooking, eating and cider apples, with 12 varieties originating in Yorkshire alone. We hope to someday harvest apples from our own trees for use in our products, as well as our trees contributing positively to the environment by absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as they grow.

When designing our bottles, we chose lightweight recycled glass from a local Yorkshire supplier. Despite higher costs, this decision reduced the carbon footprint of our bottles to 0.3kg CO2 each which is 75% lower than conventional alternatives at 1.2kg CO2. Plus, we use 40% less glass than the average spirit bottle.

We think labels are unnecessary. So we removed them from our brown bottles and now print the information directly onto the bottles instead. This has allowed us to minimise the total volume of materials needed, reduce our packaging weight and create a cleaner, lighter bottle.

We want to increase the circularity of our packaging. So we released Dutch Barn Vodka miniatures (50 ml) which come in a 100% recycled European aluminium bottle. Why? Because recycled aluminium can be back on store shelves in just 60 days. And reusing it saves 90% of the carbon and energy needed to make it from scratch. It’s a no-brainer, really.

As SME Climate Hub members and signatories of The Climate Pledge, we plan to halve our emissions by 2030 and achieve net zero by 2040. We’ve also partnered with Ecologi and Climate Partner to support over 50 global projects, avoiding 360 tonnes of CO2, offsetting another 840 tonnes, planting thousands of trees and conserving thousands of hectares of old forests.

THE FUTURE

IT DOESN’T STOP THERE

We’ve got our feet firmly planted in North Yorkshire and our eyes set on going global, but we’ll always balance people, planet and profit across everything we do. And we’ll be the first to share our wins and fails, so that you can tag along on this wild ride. Now, who’s for a drink?
